Wiper Seals
Wipers are seals that are fitted so that the Piston rod can pass through the cylinder with the seal scraping off any kind of dirt or moisture as the piston rod retracts.
A Wiper Seal is used to make sure that no debris, dust or moisture can enter the gland housing of a ram. Any kind of foreign objects or liquids that get into the gland housing could cause serious and expensive damage to any other seals that are fitted on the ram. As well as the rod and cylinder.
The most common materials used for Wiper Seals are Polyurethane and PTFE blends. To decide which material you will need, you will have to take into account the temperature it’ll be working at and the pressure that is going to be applied to the Seal while it is in use as well as other environmental factors.
